THE COMPLETE WALKTHROUGH
From your first upload
to your final image.
Here’s what happens at each step, and how to get the result you want.
01Choose the photo you want to work with.
Open the homepage and select Upload image. On a computer, you can also drag your photo into the upload area. Choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP image up to 10 MB.
Start with a clear photo where the person or object is easy to see. A well-lit subject with a sharp outline gives the background-removal model more detail to work with.

02Let EraseBG find your subject.
EraseBG processes the photo in your browser and separates the subject from the background. Your first upload also downloads the background-removal model, so the initial run can take longer.
Keep the page open while it processes. When the image is ready, it opens in the editor. Use the comparison view to check the original alongside the cutout, especially around hair, clothing, and fine edges.
The checkerboard pattern represents transparency. It is a preview, rather than a background added to your PNG.
03Give your subject a new setting.
Keep the background transparent, choose a solid colour, or upload your own background photo. A plain background works well for a clean product image; a new scene gives a portrait a different feel.
Use the editor’s background options to try different looks. Undo and redo let you revisit changes before settling on the composition you want.

04Choose your format and download.
Open the download options in the editor and choose PNG or JPG. Select PNG when you need a transparent cutout. Choose JPG when your finished photo has a solid colour or image background.
Save the downloaded file to your device, then use it in a design, product listing, presentation, or social post. If you choose JPG while the canvas is transparent, the export uses a white background.
A BETTER START
Small details.
Cleaner cutouts.
A good original gives you more room to create.
Keep the subject sharp.
Choose a photo with visible edges and enough detail. Heavy blur can make it harder to separate the subject from its surroundings.
Give it some light.
Even lighting helps preserve the shape of the subject. Very dark areas and strong shadows can blend into the background.
Check the delicate parts.
Look closely at hair, fur, thin objects, and transparent materials. Results vary by photo; try a clearer original if important details are missing.
THE RIGHT FILE FOR THE JOB
Choose the format that fits where your image is going next.
| What you need | Choose | What you get |
|---|
| A cutout to place in another design | PNG | Transparency preserved when Transparent is selected. |
|---|
| A finished photo on a colour or backdrop | PNG or JPG | Your subject and selected background in one image. |
|---|
| A JPG from a transparent canvas | JPG | A white background, because JPG cannot store transparency. |
